Winthrop Beach

A sunny day at Winthrop Beach

This open ocean beach on Broad Sound is formerly part of a barrier beach that connected two headlands north of Boston and now offers extensive sand and opportunities for swimming and wind surfing. Amenities include a beachside promenade and a comfort station with restrooms and drinking fountains. Future restoration plans include beach nourishment, new, wider sidewalks, showers, bike racks, and historic markers, the creation of a new drainage system, landscaping modifications, and traffic calming measures to Winthrop Shore Drive. The draft Environmental Impact Report for this development will be released this fall. For more information, please contact the Department of Conservation and Recreation at (617) 727-5114 or visit www.state.ma.us/mdc. Winthrop Beach is owned and operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Access: Free parking is available along Winthrop Shore Drive. The beach is also accessible via the Point Shirley bus from the MBTA's Blue Line Orient Heights station.
