Yirrell Beach

Collecting shells on Yirrell Beach

Owned by the town of Winthrop, Yirrell Beach is a relatively small, popular swimming and sunning beach used primarily by local residents. Recent improvements at this local resource include new sand, new access points, and seawall repairs. This beach is used extensively by families with small children, as the area by the base of Watertower Hill is shallow for about 100 yards out. Additionally, Yirrell Beach is popular for both surfcasting and plane watching. It is also home to the famous Sandcastle Festival on the last Saturday in June and the Old Fashion Family Day at the Beach on the third Sunday in July every year.

Access: Local residents have direct pedestrian access to the beach. There is free parking available at the town's Public Landing only a short walk away as well as limited street parking. Yirrell Beach is also accessible via bus departing from the MBTA Blue Line's Orient Heights Station during the swimming season.
